Quilt Preparation

Quilt Prep and Shipping

This information is provided so you will not have any additional prep charges. For most quilts that are square or rectangle you only need to make sure that the squared Backing (or lining) and the Batting is 4" larger than the quilt top on all 4 sides. If you have a question about the backing size for a specific quilt please call to discuss.

Backing and Batting Size

If your backing (lining) and batting material is 4 inches larger than your quilt top on all 4 sides you don't need to do anything more.If you have a baby quilt, pillow shams or a small item then 3 inches will work however we always prefer 4 inches so there is no distortion when the backing is clamped on the sides. If your quilt backing is smaller than these measurements you will need to add muslin strips to the outside of the backing only to make it 4 inches larger on all 4 sides.

Seams

Press all new seams (from steps 1) toward the outside of the quilt.

Threads

Trim threads so they don’t show through any light fabrics.

Top Pressing

Press the quilt top so the patterns lay as flat as possible. Check to see if you have any dark fabric showing under light fabric edges (if so trim 1/16 off the dark fabric).

Backing Seams

If you need to make any seams in your backing fabric don't leave the selvedge in the seam being joined.  This makes a seam that is stiff and will show up on the back.  You do not need to remove the selvedges on the outer edge of the backing.  Pressing the seam open will make the seam less noticeable.

Fabric Orientation

If there is a direction to your quilt (top or bottom) please safety pin a piece of paper indicating the top of the quilt and/or the top of the backing fabric.

Backing Placement

If you have a pieced back or a certain pattern or panel on the back and want it to be centered on the quilt top please make sure that information gets included with the order.

Pins

Do not put any other pins in the quilt top or backing fabric.

Thread Color and Patterns

Think about what color thread and what type pattern you might like on the quilt. Do you like the look of dense quilting or more sparse quilting? As a general rule we use the same color thread on the top and in the bobbin. The exception being variegated threads.

Shipping Protection

Place quilt top and backing fabric in a plastic bag before shipping.

Shipping and Insurance

The quilt will be returned using the customer’s preferred shipping service and all shipping charges and insurance (if customer desires) will be paid by the customer.
